Kandinsky's Test
Wassily Kandinsky
believed that each primary shape: triangle, circle and square. Had a
corresponding primary colour: red, yellow or blue. In 1923 he created a questionnaire
to ask people of the Bauhaus, where you had to colour in a triangle circle and
a square with a primary colour and explain why you chose to pair the shape and
colour. Kandinsky’s ideal for this was a blue circle, red square and a yellow
triangle. This result was the majority during the 1923 Bauhaus test. I gave the test to a number of friends and family, there results are as follows.
1.
Red for the triangle as a triangle has sharp
edges like blade that can draw blood and blood is red, also red has three
letters and a triangle has three sides. Yellow for the circle as it reminds me
of the sun when paired together. Blue for the square as blue has four letters and
a square has four sides.
2.
Blue for the triangle, but I would prefer green,
blue is the closest to green and they’re both considered to be colder colours.
Yellow for the circle as the sun is yellowish. Red for the square because
square things like bricks are usually red.
3.
Red for the triangle because it’s a sharp colour
and triangles have sharp points. Yellow for the circle because yellow is a
bright and soft colour that is easy on the eyes as a circle has an easy flowing
shape, reminiscent of the sun, (also didn’t want to put red and blue next to
each other). Blue for the square as a
square is a defined shape and blue seems a fittingly defined colour.
4.
Blue for the square because squares are boring
and blue is a common/bland colour. Red for the circle because I like red and I
like circles. Yellow for the triangle because it’s the only one left. I’d
colour them all red if I could.
5.
Yellow for the circle because of the sun. Blue
for the triangle because it reminds me of boats on the sea and the sea is blue.
Red for the square because it reminds me of a house and I sell red bricks.
6.
Red for the triangle because the shape reminds
me of a knife or a blade with pointed edges and if you cut yourself one’s blood
would be red. Yellow for the circle because it looks like the sun. Blue for the
square because I wanted to put a colour I like in the shape with the largest
area and it reminded me of a blue sofa I would like to buy.
7.
Blue for the triangle because the sky is blue
and the triangle is like an arrowhead pointing to the sky. Yellow for the
circle because it reminds me of the sun which is yellow and circular. Red for
the square because red represents danger or importance which could be shown on
a signpost which is usually square or rectangular.
8.
Red for the circle because I support Manchester
United and the circle reminds me of a football and happy memories. Blue for the
square because it’s my favourite colour and shape. Yellow for the triangle because
it’s the only option left.
9.
Yellow for the triangle as the ‘Y’ in triangle
feels similar to the triangle. Red for the square because red seems to make
sense to have corners. Blue for the circle because it made me think of the sea.
10.
Red for the triangle as red has three letters
and triangle has three sides. Blue for the square as blue has four letters and
a square has four sides. Yellow for the circle because it has six letters and
the ‘o’ is like a circle.
